Christmas Gifts I had to keep hidden from you! (until now!)

Handmedowns.
For my Mumma and Poppa in honor of all the handmedown clothing from my older boy cousins that they dressed me in all through my childhood. Such a love-hate relationship with those faded, patched, and hemmed clothes we wore into the ground.

Graphite drawing of my beautiful cousin Lucia May Rogerson that I gave to her for christmas.
A new style of drawing that I am really digging -- using all vertical lines with different weights as a means of shading.

Katherine Moore.
Boston, MA.

Everyone wants to attain happiness. It seems we spend our whole life chasing it. I think of Happiness as a bird who I am constantly chasing around. Sometimes I catch her, only to find that she is quick to make her escape from me.

Happiness is fleeting, always flying; but we will never give up.

-----------------

I have a poetic sensibility and artists mind.
I think in color and line and poetry.

I was born as an oil painter into my world as an artist. As I have grown artistically I have come to discover the magnificent world of watercolor. Whether through graphite drawings, oil, or watercolor paintings, I try to capture raw human emotion in my artwork by portraying a specific feeling held in a single moment. I am mostly self taught and thus paint in a way that is probably not the most effective, but has always eventually given me my desired result.

In graphite drawings I play with the light to create the mood of the work. Often, I throw in splashes of color to add emphasis to the feeling of the piece.

With oil painting, I layer the paints and often mix the colors right on the canvas -- blending color to create form, light, and movement.

My most recent work is in watercolor. I start my process by roughly drawing an outline of my subject onto the paper. Then, using a needle and black thread, I hand stitch black lines throughout the work. I find the juxtaposition of the sharp black lines of thread and the soft, smooth colors of the paint to be a stunning and effective combination. The thread creates an element in my paintings that I do not think is commonly found in watercolor works. It is a process of precision and detail with a stunning result. It is a subtle perfection. I leave hidden details in my work -- eyelashes stitched in place -- individual strands of hair -- folds in a shirt -- seams on pants -- my carefully camouflaged initials -- all the these complexities come together with the color to create a subtly stunning piece of artwork.

I am inspired by people. Their inner demons or the ones that come at them from the big old world surrounding them. Through paintings and poetry, I attempt to understand the world and everything in it.  Some things cannot merely be expressed in a word, and simple streaks of color cannot necessarily make sense of a soul.
